Organist/Keyboardist, Vocalist, & Spiritual Music Leader
LaCosta Mayes is the musical heart & soul of Mayes Community Temple — the vibrant Westside historically Black church his family founded in the 1960s. Along with Christy Mayes, LaCosta leads Mayes Community Temple’s celebrated Praise & Worship Team, which combines gospel, spiritual, & rhythm & blues influences to produce one of the most beautiful & moving Sunday services in all of Marion County. The service is carried by LaCosta’s dynamic, soul-inflected keyboard & electric organ playing, coupled with his versatile vocals for spiritual & secular songs alike. LaCosta & the Mayes Community Temple Praise & Worship team regularly perform throughout Marion County, including for special events like the Black Heritage Council’s Black History Month kickoff, and for our community’s long-running January MLK, Jr. Day celebration & memorial events. LaCosta also provides keyboards for the Marion Community Choir.
Mayes Community Temple was founded by LaCosta Mayes’ grandfather, Reverend John W. Mayes — an icon in the history of Marion’s Westside and his wife, Mother Mayes. Mayes Community Temple continues to hold services each Sunday morning under the direction of Pastor Shawn Jackson. In collaboration with Marion County Extension Educator Whitney Gherman and OSU-Extension Marion County, Mayes Community Temple also runs a vibrant urban gardening program on a nearby city lot they acquired through Marion’s Land Bank program.
