ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
Ms. Harriet Sims is one of Marion County’s best-known & loved musical performers & vocalists. She grew up in Marion City and was active the Youth NAACP & other critical racial justice efforts of the 1970s, and went on to form a popular musical act in the 1980s, which performed across North-Central & Central Ohio. Ms. Harriet’s repertoire includes everything from rhythm & blues to gospel to soul & funk. While her band is retired, she performs whenever she can as a part of the Marion Community Choir; and was one of the keynote performing artists for Marion’s 2020 Juneteenth Celebration Livestream. Ms. Harriet, along with her mother, Mother Georgia Mae Sims (age 100) has also played a key role in the maintenance of spiritual performance traditions at Marion’s almost-a-century-old Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, including directing & acting in many of the congregation’s Easter & other religious plays and performances over the past four decades. Ms. Harriet is a keystone in Marion County’s musical heritage & legacy, and is known around the county & beyond for her resonant, beautiful voice, & her long-standing commitment to racial justice organizing for more just Marion County futures.
